3 Unusual City Breaks To Take This Spring/Fall

3 Unusual City Breaks To Take This Spring/Fall

After being cooped up in your house during the polar vortex-dominated winter that has gripped the Northern Hemisphere over the past several months, or hiding from the blazing sun of an Australian summer, you’re ready to venture out and explore now that the weather has gotten considerably more comfortable.

However, the same old city breaks that you have heard about just make your eyes glaze over when you hear about them: London, Sydney, New York City!  Being well-travelled, and considering your taste for destinations that are off the beaten track, you are looking for urban areas that don’t normally get trumpeted in the travel media.

You could just blindfold yourself and throw darts at a map, but to minimize the potential of disappointment, we have dug up the dirt on three cities that won’t just appeal to you with their unique attractions, but will also give you some serious travel bragging rights with your peer group.

1. Asheville, North Carolina, USA

Sitting at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the heart of Appalachia, this liberally-minded city has cultural and outdoors related attractions that will delight virtually all that visit this friendly place. Those that admire wealth will enjoy strolling through the grandeur of the Biltmore Estate, while those that wish to commune with nature will find abundant hiking opportunities a short way up the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the rushing rivers that tumble out of these heights will give you some serious thrills on one of the many white-water rafting trips that operate here.

2. Tallinn, Estonia

Due to some extraordinary luck over the ages, the Estonian city of Tallinn has retained more of its original medieval structures than most cities in Europe. After spending a leisurely afternoon strolling through these ageless buildings, take to its pubs and bars by night, as this city has an infamous reputation for its raucous nightlife.

3. Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

While taking a city break in Australia usually meaning visiting Brisbane, Melbourne, or even jumping across the Tasman Sea to visit Auckland in New Zealand, little attention on the same level is reserved for Hobart.  Being the charming capital of Tasmania, Hobart was borne out of less noble intentions, as it had its start as a penal colony around the start of the 19th century. Start your morning (on Saturdays) at the Salamanca Market, where an abundance of quality crafts await potential buyers. Continue on after a heavy lunch to Cascade Brewery, where Australia’s oldest brewery offer tours of their facility, with samples to follow afterwards.

Check out delicious culinary in Makassar, Sulawesi.
